“The EU strongly condemns the Rwandan military presence in the DRC, calls for an immediate withdrawal of troops”

News: Condemnation of the Rwandan military presence in the DRC

The situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to concern the international community. The European Union recently strongly condemned the Rwandan military presence in the region to support the Tutsi M23 rebellion. This rebellion is accused of numerous deadly attacks against civilians.

In a statement by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, it was pointed out that Rwanda’s support for M23 and the presence of its troops in the DRC have been revealed by reports from the UN group of experts. The EU already expressed its concern about this in December 2022, and this strong condemnation reinforces the call for an immediate withdrawal of Rwandan troops.

The EU also urges the DRC to end its support and cooperation with local and foreign armed groups, in particular the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). The latter, composed mainly of members of the Hutu ethnic group, are considered a threat by the Rwandan government currently in place. It is therefore essential that the DRC take all necessary measures to protect its civilian population.

UN experts recently published an alarming report on the growing violence in eastern DRC, highlighting the growing humanitarian needs of the population. This situation requires urgent action to end the violence and ensure the safety of civilians.

It is essential that the international community continue to closely monitor the situation in the DRC and take appropriate measures to end the violence and restore stability in the region
