Restrictions of the democratic space in the province of Kasaï-Central: LUCHA denounces a decline in democracy
In a recent statement, the citizens’ movement “Lutte pour leChange” (LUCHA) strongly criticized the restrictions of the democratic space in the province of Kasaï-Central, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The movement denounces a series of acts of political intolerance, vandalism, physical attacks, torture, intimidation, arbitrary arrests and even programs inciting hatred.
According to LUCHA, these acts are perpetrated by a group of activists from a well-identified political party, namely the UDPS and its allies. Since Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi came to power, the situation has reportedly deteriorated, jeopardizing efforts to establish the rule of law in the province.
Faced with this dark picture, LUCHA vehemently condemns the decline of democracy and the establishment of totalitarian power in the province of Kasaï-Central. The movement calls on John Kabeya to strictly adhere to democratic standards and also asks the interior minister to transfer the commander of the Congolese national police in the city, Colonel John Mbela, for his incapacity and alleged complicity.
LUCHA warns and announces large-scale actions if these recommendations are not taken into account. It should be recalled that in December 2022, LUCHA and civil society activists were violently attacked by a group of unidentified people while peacefully demonstrating to demand the start of work on the Kananga-Kalambambuji road.
It is essential to highlight these attacks on democracy and human rights, in order to raise awareness and promote positive change in the province of Kasaï-Central. Committed citizens and civil society organizations must continue to fight for the protection of democratic principles and for the establishment of a genuine rule of law in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In conclusion, it is essential that Governor John Kabeya and the competent authorities take concrete measures to put an end to these restrictions of the democratic space and to guarantee the fundamental freedoms of all citizens. Democracy is an essential pillar of a country’s development and must be protected and strengthened in all circumstances
