DRC: An alarming increase in human rights violations, according to a United Nations report

The United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) recently published an alarming report on the human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to this report, the number of human rights violations and abuses increased by 16% compared to the previous month, with a total of 418 documented incidents across the country.

Among the most serious violations are 126 cases of violations of the right to life, which caused the death of 313 people. These figures include 276 victims of extrajudicial and summary executions, which is extremely worrying.

The report also highlights that state agents are responsible for 36% of human rights violations and abuses, while armed groups are responsible for 64% of these incidents. The latter committed 266 human rights violations, an increase of 23% compared to the previous month.

In the provinces affected by the conflicts, the armed groups are responsible for 75% of the violations, which includes 247 victims of summary executions. This represents an increase from the previous month.

The UNJHRO also underlines its support for the Congolese authorities in their efforts to fight against impunity and prosecute those responsible for these violations. Several convictions have already been handed down by Congolese civil and military courts, including that of a former leader of an armed group for crimes against humanity.

This alarming situation underlines the importance of continuing efforts to guarantee respect for human rights in the DRC. It is essential that those responsible for these violations are brought to justice and that effective measures are taken to prevent further incidents. The international community must continue to support the DRC in these efforts and to press for the fundamental rights of all citizens to be respected
