Identity cards in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a major issue for the population
Since the last census in 1984, the Democratic Republic of Congo had not set up an identity card system for its population. However, this situation is about to change, as announced recently by the Minister of Communication and Media, Patrick Muyaya. Indeed, in the coming weeks, the Congolese authorities will begin the process of issuing identity cards, which will concern no less than 44 million citizens.
According to Minister Muyaya, this new identity card will allow the country to have a general file of its population, a major step forward for the DRC. He also points out that this process is not to be taken lightly, both in terms of logistics and workload. Indeed, 44 million people represent more than all the countries of the sub-region combined.
In order to carry out this operation, the Congolese government has called on an operator specializing in the issuance of identity cards, which has already worked with India. The latter will collaborate with the National Office for Personal Identification (ONIP) to ensure the implementation of this new system.
