Clashes between M23 terrorists and local armed groups have erupted again in the village of Kausa, located in the Kirolirwe region of North Kivu. This violence, which began on Sunday July 2, 2023 in the evening, follows clashes already recorded the day before in the same region.
According to several sources, the M23 terrorists, supported by the Rwandan army, have occupied part of the Sake-Kitshanga axis, in particular the sections of Kirolirwe and Nturo. For their part, the local armed groups are said to have entrenched themselves in Kabati, about 15 km away.
Civil society in Masisi reports palpable tension in the region. Traffic on this axis is interrupted due to the presence of M23 terrorists and fighters from various local armed groups.
Residents of Kirolirwe and Nturo fled their village to take refuge in Mushaki and Ruvunda, in the same region. Local sources reported the presence of two unidentified bodies at the entrance to the Espoir farm in Nturo, 2 km from Kirolirwe. Other sources report two dead and several injured, but this information has not yet been officially confirmed.
Recent clashes have also pitted the M23 against fighters from the Nyatura group, not far from Kingi, on the same axis of Kitshanga, in the Kamurhonza groupement.
These latest events underscore once again the continuing instability in the North Kivu region, marked by clashes between armed groups and tensions between different factions. It is essential that measures are taken to promote peace and security in this part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
