News: The United States again condemns Rwanda’s support for the M23 terrorist movement in the DRC
During the United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United States once again expressed its condemnation of the Rwandan government’s support for the M23 rebel movement. This condemnation comes as the M23 continues to occupy territories in the province of North Kivu.
The US representative to the UN, Robert Wood, reminded the Council that Rwanda’s direct support for M23, which has been sanctioned by the UN, constitutes a violation of Security Council resolutions. He called on other Council members to pressure the Rwandan government to withdraw its troops from the DRC and immediately stop supporting the rebel movement.
According to Mr. Wood, it is crucial to adopt a regional approach to resolving this crisis, by addressing the root causes of conflicts in the region. The United States supports mediation efforts led by Angola, Kenya and the East African Community, and calls for coordination of operations with MONUSCO, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC.
The American diplomat also expressed his concerns about the collaboration between the armed forces of the DRC and non-state armed groups in the east of the country, in particular the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which have also been sanctioned by the UN.
The United States has called on the Congolese government to fully professionalize its security forces and end this cooperation with armed groups. They pledged to support MONUSCO in its mandate to protect civilians and help strengthen governance, justice and security institutions in the DRC.
It is essential that this mission receive the support of the Security Council and the Congolese government in order to allow the realization of the peace so desired by the Congolese people. The United States is committed to supporting the DRC in its quest for a better future
