June 30, 2023 marks the 63rd anniversary of the independence of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, while the Congolese celebrate this historic date, the opponent Moïse Katumbi draws a critical assessment of the situation in the country. Candidate for the next presidential election, he denounces a financial, social and political disaster.
Katumbi, former governor of Katanga province, calls on young people to rediscover the spirit of the fathers of independence to put the country back on the path to progress. Despite more than six decades of independence, he says nothing works in the DRC. Insecurity, hunger and misery are widespread, democracy is retreating.
Faced with these challenges, the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, recognizes the difficulties affecting the Congolese, in particular the decline in purchasing power. He points out that the country’s economic performance is limited by the global context and the security situation in the east of the country.
However, Tshisekedi expresses confidence in the short to medium term outlook, with encouraging economic growth forecasts. He asserts that improving the living conditions of the Congolese remains a daily priority.
The DRC government and the Central Bank of Congo are mandated to stabilize macroeconomic parameters, improve governance and meet the aspirations of the population.
At the same time, other issues are also addressed in the articles already published on the blog. In particular, there is talk of a vital partnership between Dr. Denis Mukwege and the Republic of Congo to end sexual violence in the DRC. There is also a spoliation case in the DRC linked to the concession of Mobutu’s estate, which reveals rampant corruption. The coordination of regional forces to ensure security in the east of the country is also a topic discussed, as well as innovative solutions to solve traffic problems in Kinshasa, such as the cable car. A country risk conference in the DRC highlights the importance of a positive economic future. The integrity of the DRC is threatened, but resilience persists. The military programming law aims to modernize the armed forces to strengthen national security.
In conclusion, as the DRC celebrates its independence, it is clear that many challenges remain. However, there is also hope and a commitment to move the country towards a better future.
