The Fatshi Cup tournament, organized by the Union of Central African Football Federations (UNIFFAC), is set to start on July 1, 2023 at the Martyrs Stadium. This competition, reserved for players under 20, will bring together six nations from the region: Chad, Gabon, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The opening match will oppose the U20 Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the U20 of the Chadian Federation of Football Association, on July 1 at 5 p.m. The young Congolese players are preparing actively by playing several friendly matches in order to approach the tournament in the best conditions. This intense preparation will also serve as preparation for their participation in the 9th Games of La Francophonie which will take place in Kinshasa in July.
The Fatshi Cup tournament aims to promote football among young people and access to the Martyrs stadium will be free for all fans of this king sport. It is an opportunity for spectators to discover the talents of tomorrow and to support the national teams of the region.
In parallel with this sporting event, other news mark the Congolese scene. For example, Mai-Mai militiamen surrendered to the armed forces to contribute to the pacification of North Kivu, a significant step forward in the fight against armed groups (source: article link). In addition, a gold trafficker, Stéphane Giannesini, was sentenced for illegal possession of this precious mineral, which constitutes a victory in the fight against the trafficking of mineral substances in the DRC (source: article link).
The article also provides information on the establishment of a curfew in Mambasa in Ituri to ensure the safety of the population (source: article link) and on the measures taken to strengthen security in Kinshasa, particularly in transport together, in order to fight against kidnappings and violence (source: article link).
In addition, headteachers have been suspended in Tshuapa for State exam fraud, which testifies to the determination of the Congolese authorities in the fight against corruption (source: article link).
It is also important to underline the current political challenges in the DRC, in particular the tensions between the government and the Catholic Church (source: article link). In addition, candidate Delly Sesanga expressed his concern over President Tshisekedi’s remarks, which he considers a threat to the security and stability of the country (source: article link).
Finally, the United States warned of the consequences of the withdrawal of the United Nations Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), highlighting the risks for the security of vulnerable populations (source: article link).
The sporting event of the Fatshi Cup tournament is therefore an opportunity for the Democratic Republic of Congo to showcase its talented youth, while taking into account the challenges it faces on other fronts. The DRC continues to face political and security challenges, but positive actions such as the surrenders of militiamen and convictions for economic crimes show a will to tackle these issues and build a better future for the country.
