The SADC, EAC, CIRGL and ECCAS summit on the security situation in eastern DRC is convened this Tuesday, June 27 in Luanda (Angola). This convocation results from the initiative of the African Union and was taken during the 10th extraordinary summit on peace and security in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Sudan which took place is held at the beginning of June.
The members present at the summit aim to improve the coordination of regional peace efforts and initiatives by involving the political and military aspects. However, the Deputy Prime Minister of the DRC, Christophe Lutundula, expressed his concern about clarifying the roles of each country and organization involved, in order to avoid “spoiling the sauce”. Indeed, many foreign troops as well as international organizations, such as the African Union and the United Nations, are present in the region. With the approach of the elections, it is crucial to clarify the roles of each and to coordinate the efforts for a lasting peace while respecting the sovereignty of the DRC.
The summit is therefore eagerly awaited, and a team of experts has been working since June 23 to prepare the meeting, which will also see the participation of the United Nations. All this in the hope of finding a lasting solution to the conflicts ravaging eastern DRC.
