Political issues in the DRC: Jean-Marc Kabund deprived of his presidential candidacy

This Tuesday, June 27, 2023, the Ministry of the Interior published a list of 910 political parties authorized to compete in the elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Among the political formations not selected is the Alliance for Change, a party initiated by the former 1st Vice-President of the National Assembly Jean-Marc Kabund. This decision thus deprives Kabund and his allies of the possibility of aligning the candidates for the next elections.

The secretary general of the Alliance for Change, who had affirmed that his political party was in good standing with the Congolese state, denounces a “relentlessness” to exclude Kabund and his people from the next elections. Thus, Kabund’s party will not be able to participate in the 2023 presidential election, even though Jean-Marc Kabund is still detained in the former central prison of Makala.

Since the separation between Kabund and Felix Tshisekedi, the former had founded the Alliance for Change with a view to running for the supreme office. An ambition therefore blocked by the non-approval of his political formation on the list of the Ministry of the Interior.

This situation comes in a context where political tensions are already high in the DRC, with accusations and counter-accusations between the main actors of power and growing insecurity in certain regions. In addition, this decision by the Ministry of the Interior could revive concerns about the consolidation of democracy in the DRC.

The situation therefore promises to be tense to say the least in the DRC, with electoral issues still just as important and the question of democratic consolidation which seems more topical than ever. The next few months will therefore certainly be rich in major political events in this Central African country in search of stability.
