As part of the Kananga Urban Emergency and Resilience Project (PURUK), the World Bank has allocated 100 million dollars to set up emergency works aimed at combating the erosion that threatens the city of Kananga and all Kasai Central province. This was announced by Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, when he launched the works on the site of the SNCC, Monusco and at PK 706.
The provincial official of the Office of Roads and Drainage, present on the spot, explained that the work includes in particular the construction of large collectors, the stabilization of the embankments as well as the planting of anti-erosion plants.
The Vice-President of the World Bank, Victoria Kwakwa, also attended the launching ceremony and underlined the importance of the partnership between the Bank and the Democratic Republic of Congo. She also mentioned that the Kananga project is in addition to several other projects of common interest financed by the World Bank group in the Greater Kasai area.
These works were considered urgent because they save the city of Kananga and the entire province from possible total isolation in the event of a cut in the RN1 and the railway line leading to Greater Katanga. President Tshisekedi has also planned to visit several projects that were launched last year, to ensure their progress.
After his visit to Kananga, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo will go to Mbuji-Mayi, to participate in the commemorative festivities of the 25 years of episcopate of Bishop Emmanuel Bernard Kasanda. During his stay, President Tshisekedi will deliver a speech on his commitment to pacify the Democratic Republic of Congo and preserve its unity.
