The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to deteriorate. On June 21, 2023 in Moba in the province of Tanganyika, clashes opposed the FARDC and Twa militiamen. The latter would have been caught stealing corn from the fields of the Bantu. The soldiers tried to stop them but the militiamen rebelled and started shooting arrows. Despite the intervention of the police, one soldier died and two others were injured.
Sources on the ground report that these events also resulted in the burning of houses in the Marko and Kisase villages by the Twa militiamen in question. Population movements have been observed and soldiers have been deployed in the region. This new situation is likely to increase tensions and insecurity in this part of the country.
It is important to emphasize that these militiamen that the FARDC faced in Moba are those who hid in the territory after committing abuses in the locality of Tembwe. Faced with this increase in violence, the United Nations Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) must absolutely strengthen its position in order to guarantee the safety of the population.
While the DRC finds itself in this alarming situation, it is important that the authorities act effectively to fight against the armed groups which are a source of insecurity in certain parts of the country. International organizations, for their part, must be more present on the ground in order to effectively combat the violence perpetrated by these armed groups and put an end to insecurity in the region.
