On June 25, 2023, Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, attended the jubilee mass of Bernard Kasanda, Bishop of the diocese of Mbuji-mayi at the Kashala Bonzola stadium. The Congolese head of state took the opportunity to recall the importance of unity between the Church and power, especially in the run-up to general elections. However, he also expressed his concerns about the attitude of some Catholic prelates who, according to him, risked dividing the Congolese.
“A dangerous drift” according to Tshisekedi
During his speech, Félix Tshisekedi pronounced these words: “This is perhaps the opportunity for me to sound the alarm about a certain drift observed within the Catholic Church. A drift that I would describe as dangerous especially in this election year, the church must be in the middle of the village (…) which risks dividing our nation. As a guarantor of the unity of this nation, I feel obliged to say that I will never accept such a drift”. Strong words that sound the alarm from a president who wants above all the unity of his country.
The general elections next December
The context of the general elections to be held in December 2023 only heightens tensions between the Catholic Church and the power in place, as was the case under the reign of the previous President, Joseph Kabila. The Congolese are therefore called upon to be vigilant so that their choice is respected.
In this crucial period, it is important that the Church plays the role of unifier and that it accompanies all Congolese citizens in their political commitment, without distinction of any kind. There is no doubt that Felix Tshisekedi will continue to work to maintain the best relations with the Catholic Church in particular, hoping that the latter also plays its role in the interest of the unity and stability of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
