Serial deadly violence in the Maluku region of the DRC: local authorities are concerned about a new resurgence of violence

Insecurity has become a scourge for the population of Pongwene village, in the commune of Maluku, in Kinshasa. On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, the inhabitants of this village witnessed a barbaric act: the village chief, Mona Mikeme Nku, was beheaded in front of his entire family. This is not the first time that acts of violence have been committed in this region, despite the deployment of the Army.

The attackers belonging to the Mabondo community are believed to be located in the communes of Mongata and Batshongo. The situation has not escaped the vigilance of the local authorities, who are worried about a new resurgence of violence in the area.

In addition to this bloody attack, the Mabondo militiamen also attacked the religious. A convent of Jesuit priests was recently attacked in Iniangi village, in the diocese of PopoKabaka. These elements constitute a real danger for the local population, which feels even more vulnerable.

Beyond the Maluku region, the DRC is faced with other challenges, in particular that of embezzlement of public funds, as the case of Édouard Mwangachuchu recently demonstrated. However, the country relies on its natural resources to contribute effectively to sustainable development and the energy transition.

President Félix Tshisekedi is stepping up actions to help his country find funding and develop. He recently visited China to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Finally, the distribution of seats in the National Assembly is also a subject that arouses the interest of Congolese. MP Solange Masumbuko expressed her opinion on the new law on the distribution of seats.

Despite the difficulties the country is facing, it continues to hope for a transition to the era of sustainable development and prosperity. This is the wish of all Congolese, and the government is striving to put in place the conditions to achieve it.
