Tension has risen a notch in recent hours in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following the attack by Ugandan rebels of the Democratic and Allied Forces (ADF) in the localities of Mutuweyi, Makanga and Bekembela, Bandavilemba grouping in the chiefdom of Walese Vonkutu (Ituri). The human losses are very high and the population is frightened.
Human rights activist Christophe Munyanderu reports that 3 to 8 civilians have been killed during their rural activities in this dangerous area, where terrorists who have taken civilians hostage circulate. According to the same source, ADF bastions would be installed in this area near the province of North Kivu.
This attack once again highlights the disarray that still reigns in certain regions of the DRC, which are struggling to emerge from decades of conflict and insecurity. Christophe Munyanderu thus asks the population not to frequent this risky zone and asks the joint Fardc-Updf force to pursue the enemy.
It is time to put an end to the insecurity that still reigns in certain parts of the country. Public investments should be prioritized towards key sectors such as energy and infrastructure to support economic growth. The Congolese authorities must also work together with the international community to stabilize the political, economic and social situation in the country.
This ADF attack also reminds the Congolese authorities of their responsibility for the security of citizens. Measures must be taken to guarantee their protection against terrorist attacks
