The Democratic Republic of Congo and China decided, during Félix Tshisekedi’s meeting with his counterpart, Xi Jinping, on Friday May 26, 2023 in Beijing, China, to support each other in international affairs and to defend the international order. based on the law and norms governing relations between States, according to the final communiqué made public by the DRC Presidency.
The two states will also intensify their support on issues affecting each other’s vital interests, which is the essential objective of Sino-Congolese relations.
In this context, the Chinese side expressed its firm support for the DRC in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and development interests. It also reaffirms its opposition to interference by external forces in the internal affairs of the DRC. For its part, the DRC reiterates its firm attachment to the principle of one China, believes that Taiwan is an integral part of China.
Despite a security situation that is struggling to improve in the eastern part of the DRC because of Rwandan aggression via the M23 rebels who still occupy certain localities in the territories of Rutshuru and Masisi in the province of North Kivu, the regional force EACRF has recovered, since December, some of the strongholds of the rebellion. However, the rebels are still present on the ground, and Kinshasa has therefore turned to SADC to send troops there.
Thus, lasting peace in the DRC is more than ever on the agenda, with the actions carried out by the various actors concerned to restore the country’s security and territorial integrity. Ongoing events must be closely monitored to ensure a peaceful and prosperous society for the citizens of the DRC
