Meeting in Beijing on May 26, the Heads of State of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and China, Félix Tshisekedi and Xi Jinping, had discussions on strengthening cooperation between their two countries. In particular, they discussed issues related to security and defence, agreeing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in these areas.
China has undertaken to support the DRC in the implementation of its military programming law, a multi-year financial law which sets the deadlines for payment appropriations relating to expenditure on equipment and development of the Armed Forces. This commitment also includes capacity building for the Congolese army, as well as exchanges between the two armies, particularly in the fight against cross-border crime.
The Congolese government adopted this military programming law last year, with the aim of strengthening the operational capacity of its armed forces. However, the security situation in the DRC still remains fragile, with sporadic conflicts in certain provinces such as Kwango. But the country still relies on the commitment of its international partners to achieve its goals.
In parallel, in the cultural field, the painter Patsheli Kahambo exhibits her works at the Malabo Gallery in Kinshasa, reflecting the energy and aspirations of the Congo. The DRC relies on artistic expression to promote its wealth and cultural diversity.
Finally, the appointment of Pascaline Zamuda as deputy director of FONHAB (National Housing Fund) is seen as good news for the promotion of social housing in the DRC.
Beyond these news, tension is rising in the DRC and the opposition is being suppressed by law enforcement, a subject to watch closely in the days and weeks to come.
