Security in the DRC: 2 people killed in an ADF attack in Kilya
An attack by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists took place on the night of Thursday to Friday, May 26, 2023, in Kilya, in the territory of Beni, North Kivu, killing two people who were beheaded with machetes. The coordinator of the new Congolese civil society speaks of a relaxation of joint FARDC-UPDF operations in the area and calls for the continuation of these operations which have enabled the return of several inhabitants to the area.
For some time, the population of Rwenzori had been alerting the authorities to the presence of suspicious movements that would be the work of the ADF in the town of Kilya, but these alerts were not sufficiently taken into account. To stem this scourge, the population must remain vigilant and report any suspicious case.
In addition, several armed militias, including the M23 and Rwanda, continue to threaten peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The security situation is therefore worrying, especially since civilian populations are often taken hostage during these clashes. In this context, the Congolese government must redouble its efforts to guarantee the security of its citizens.
In addition, other topical issues agitate the DRC, including the meeting between the Congolese and Chinese heads of state which strengthens cooperation in security and defence; the HJ foundation in mobilization and solidarity for the victims of the floods in South Kivu; and the official visit of the Congolese First Lady to China.
However, there are still subjects that continue to fuel controversy, such as the banning of former Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo’s conference in Kengé and the disciplinary measures taken against CML13tv and its hosts for hate speech.
The DRC remains a country in search of stability and peace and must constantly meet security challenges to ensure a safe and protective environment for all its citizens.
