The violent repression of the demonstration organized on Saturday May 20 by the opposition in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to provoke strong reactions. Cases of police blunders have been reported, which prompted the deputy adolescent Ndombasi to table an oral question with debate against the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior.
In his approach, the deputy wishes to obtain explanations on the criteria for recruiting police officers as well as the terms of their remuneration. Two dead and several injured were recorded, but the official version speaks only of a non-respect of the itinerary by the organizers of the event.
These events have analysts fearing a deterioration of the already precarious political situation in the DRC. Many international actors have denounced the violence used against the demonstrators, signaling a dictatorial drift by the regime in place.
Importantly, the DRC is taking a crucial step towards transnational connectivity with the launch of the Africa Congo Internet Exchange. This ambitious project aims to connect the country to an international network to develop the digital boom.
In this context, it is essential to guarantee a stable political framework respectful of human rights to enable sustainable economic and social development.
