The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a country in search of peace and stability, especially in its eastern part. It is in this perspective that President Félix Tshisekedi called on the government to redouble its efforts to guarantee peace and security throughout the national territory. He also encouraged the Armed Forces of the DRC to hold firm in the accomplishment of their sovereign missions.
This recommendation comes after his participation in two important summits for the search for the return of peace in the East of the Republic. First, the president went to Bujumbura, where he took part in the 11th meeting of the High Level of the Regional Monitoring Mechanism of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region, called the Addis Ababa Framework Agreement. A few days later, he attended the Extraordinary Meeting of the Troika of the summit of the SADC body and the countries contributing troops to the MONUSCO Intervention Brigade on the security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which was held in Windoeck, the capital of Namibia.
During these two regional summits, the Congolese president pleaded for the revitalization of the Framework Agreement, which is however in abeyance due to the repeated shortcomings of certain countries, including Rwanda. The latter is accused of supporting the terrorist movement M23, in violation of the commitments yet consecrated. The security situation in the eastern part of the DRC remains precarious, and regional diplomatic initiatives are struggling to find a solution.
To support the FARDC in the fight that opposes them to the aggressors and enemies of the DRC, SADC has adopted an action plan aiming at the deployment in the country of one more brigade as part of its standby force. Kinshasa now expects the regional force to efficiently apply the offensive mandate as defined by the various agreements signed in Angola and Kenya.
Despite the various initiatives carried out by the Congolese government and regional forces, the security situation remains unstable and unpredictable, with recurrent violence in many regions of the country. Human rights defenders call for action and condemn the violent repression of the opposition march in Kinshasa as well as the crackdown in other regions.
In short, although considerable efforts have been made to restore peace and stability in the DRC, security issues persist, particularly in its eastern part. The support of the regional forces is a hope for the country, but the concrete application of all the measures envisaged is crucial so that the population can finally live in normality.
