“National deputy Édouard Mwangachuchu prosecuted for treason and possession of weapons: the High Military Court questions his nationality and his country of residence”

National deputy Édouard Mwangachuchu is being prosecuted for treason and possession of weapons by the public prosecutor. In a new hearing at the High Military Court, documents questioned his nationality as well as his country of residence. The Covid-19 test taken during his trip to Rwanda in May 2021 reveals that he presented himself as a Rwandan subject. However, the defendant denies being Rwandan and questions the document which implicates him.

According to Mwangachuchu, on the day he took this test, he wanted to leave Goma for Kinshasa via Kigali airport due to the closure of Goma airport. He had been brought to the stadium to take the Covid-19 test like everyone else who had to travel at the time. He claims to have used only Congolese passports in all his travels and never to have applied for a Rwandan passport or Rwandan nationality.

The national deputy is also suspected of being in cahoots with Rwanda to attack the DRC. The Constitutional Court declared admissible but unfounded his motion of unconstitutionality raised on April 27, asking the High Military Court to continue the investigation of the case.

This case is an illustration of the complexity of the current political situation in the DRC. Tensions between different political actors have led to violent protests in the capital, Kinshasa, and armed clashes in some parts of the country. The Congolese government must find ways to maintain security and stability in the country.

In parallel, there have been initiatives to stimulate economic growth and strengthen financial decentralization for local development. President Tshisekedi drew inspiration from the Botswana economic model to achieve this goal. The country has also been selected to host the Games of La Francophonie in 2023, an opportunity for the DRC to show its tourist and cultural potential.

However, the security situation remains fragile, as evidenced by the Teke-Yaka conflict in Kwamouth. The implementation of an effective strategy for safety at sea and on rivers is necessary to avoid further tragedies.

In sum, the political situation in the DRC is complex, but there are positive initiatives to strengthen development and stability in the country.
