“16 civilians killed in new rebel attack in North Kivu: violence continues to plague the region”

Violence continues in North Kivu. According to information collected by ACTUALITÉ.CD from civil society and the military administrator of Beni, at least 16 civilians were killed in a new attack attributed to ADF rebels. The attack took place on the night of Friday May 19 to Saturday May 20, in the village of Katula, in the Bashu chiefdom, south of the Beni territory.

The attackers used machetes and firearms, targeting civilians who were gathered for a place of mourning. The Bashu chieftaincy is regularly the target of ADF fighters and this attack is not the first.

The exact number of victims is still being confirmed but the provisional toll remains at 16 dead, including one woman. Nevertheless, this assessment is likely to increase because several people do not yet answer the call.

Faced with this critical situation, the Congolese population is in shock. Local authorities are trying to find solutions but violence continues to spread in the region. In the midst of all this, civil society, as well as international organizations such as the World Bank, continue to work for the development of the DRC, despite the persistent security and economic challenges.
