“Deadly violence in the north of Bunia: 530 civilians killed in six months”

The north of the city of Bunia, in the territories of Djugu and Mahagi, is plagued by armed violence perpetrated by militiamen. In a press briefing moderated by the head of the MONUSCO office in Ituri, Soro Karna revealed that 530 civilians were killed in six months, from December 1, 2022 to May 10, 2023.

This violence also affected sites for displaced people, putting the lives of thousands of people at risk. MONUSCO continues to support dialogues and the protection of civilians in the province.

The number of civilians killed reveals the urgency of ending the violence in this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country is facing a very worrying security situation, with armed groups increasingly determined to sow terror.

It is crucial that MONUSCO’s efforts be supported, with the involvement of all actors in Congolese society. The security of the populations must be the absolute priority so that peace and stability can be restored in the territories of Djugu and Mahagi
