For some time, two self-defense groups “Wazalendo” and “Patriots” have been fighting over the occupation and management of the Kyavinyonge fishery, located on the north coast of Lake Edward, in the Bashu chiefdom, in Beni territory, North Kivu province. Fighting in this region of the Democratic Republic of Congo has threatened fishing activities and the safety of local populations.
To put an end to this battle, General Robert Kasongo, commander of the Sokola 1 Grand-Nord operational sector, instructed the fighters of the two self-defense groups to leave the fishery. He also handed over a large sum of money to secure their return.
General Robert Kasongo also reassured the population of the region that the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) are working to pacify the area. “The army is concerned and all the necessary measures are being taken to completely eradicate the enemy, who continues to mourn the peaceful population,” he said.
It should be emphasized that self-defense is a growing phenomenon in the DRC, due to internal conflicts and persistent insecurity in certain regions. Vigilante groups act to defend local communities, but their presence can also make the situation worse. The country’s authorities must do everything possible to restore peace and security in these insecure regions.
