Attack against eco-guards in Virunga National Park: Three dead and six injured

Insecurity in the DRC continues, despite all efforts to improve the situation. Virunga National Park, in Lubero Territory, was recently ambushed by a group of armed men. This attack cost the lives of three eco-guards as well as a technician who accompanied the convoy. Six other people were also injured, including three members of the local community living in the nearby village.

ICCN, Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature, deplores this tragic event and strongly condemns this attack against civilians and guards. ICCN emphasizes that this attack jeopardizes the development projects in favor of the local populations, deployed in this region of the territory. An investigation to identify the perpetrators and prosecute them is requested.

However, it is important to note that this attack is not an isolated case. Indeed, ICCN eco-guards are regularly targeted, as was the case last February.

Faced with this growing insecurity in the country, adequate and effective solutions must be found. National and local authorities are urged to take action to ensure the safety of eco-guards and local communities living in these areas.

Overall, it is regrettable that violence continues to plague the Democratic Republic of Congo, endangering the lives of people and the socio-economic development of the country.
