Title: More than 60 fighters demobilize in Lubero
On May 16, 2023, more than 60 combatants belonging to armed groups in Lubero territory officially renounced violence. This demobilization is part of the disarmament and demobilization operations carried out by the Congolese government to encourage peace and development.
The militiamen, who mostly control Lubero territory, were encouraged to give up their life in the bush during a ceremony attended by the provincial coordinator of the P-DDRC-s Clovis Munihire Mmaheshe. Three AK-47 type weapons and some explosives were handed over to the military administrator of Lubero territory, Colonel Alain Kiwewa, as a sign of renunciation of violence.
These combatants received food and non-food as a sign of encouragement for their choice of the path of peace. This demobilization is an encouraging sign for the territory of Lubero, where insecurity is growing.
The Congolese government continues its efforts to encourage peace and development in the DRC, notably with the opening of the flagship factory of the special economic zone of Musienene, the agreement reached with the World Bank for the continuation of key development projects , or the organization of an international symposium on the crucial role of constitutional justice in consolidating the rule of law and democracy in the DRC.
However, the persistent insecurity in certain areas, such as the Virunga National Park where attacks have been perpetrated against eco-guards, or in Lubumbashi where the Justice and Peace Commission is calling for urgent investigations and appropriate solutions, shows that much remains to be done to guarantee peace and stability in the DRC
