Article: A businessman helps the victims of the landslide in Kalehe

Villagers of Nyamukubi and Bushushu villages in Kalehe territory, eastern DR Congo, are struggling to recover after the landslide on May 4, 2023 which caused enormous human and material damage. Nearly 500 people lost their lives and thousands more are still missing. To help these affected populations, businessman Harish Jagtani, founder of the HJ Foundation, mobilized more than 80 tons of food and non-food items to relieve them.

On the night of Tuesday May 9 to Wednesday May 10, the foundation conveyed the lot from Goma (North Kivu) through the Muhini Vital port (South Kivu). Trucks from Servair, one of the companies belonging to Harish Jagtani, were also used to bring all the cargo to the port of Goma. The mobilization of the foundation has made it possible to provide food, equipment and medicine to the victims to alleviate their misery even a little.

The founder of HJ Foundation, Harish Jagtani, has, through this charitable gesture, offered these populations unprecedented assistance in the DRC. 30 cans of oil, 1,000 bags of rice, 7 bags of sugar, 4 generators, 300 bags of corn flour, 200 boxes of sardines, 300 boxes of biscuits, 30 boxes of salt, 100 bags of embers, tanks toilets, mattresses, beds and medicines were given to these affected populations.

In addition, HJ Foundation has mobilized 81 coffin pieces to allow the dignified burial of some missing compatriots and whose research continues until the publication of this article. The foundation has also deployed a dozen qualified doctors and nurses on site for the free treatment of patients.

The people of Kalehe and their leaders expressed their gratitude to Harish Jagtani and his foundation for their gesture of solidarity with the victims. The operation led by the businessman is the first large-scale assistance for these affected populations
