Deadly attacks in the DRC: the need to strengthen security

On Sunday May 14, the Beni-Kasindi road, in the Ruwenzori sector of Beni province, was the scene of a new deadly attack attributed to ADF rebels. The assailants emerged when a truck from Kasindi passed for Beni, killing the driver and seriously injuring the assistant driver and the conveyor. They also took away property that was on board the truck.

Despite the efforts of the Congolese and Ugandan armed forces to secure the region, local civil society is concerned about the deterioration of the security situation. This attack once again underlines the need to strengthen security in the region and to continue the joint operations carried out by the two countries.

This news comes in a context where issues of security and violence are at the center of concerns in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Recent events such as the landslide in Kalehe or the unpunished massacres in Kisangani have reignited the population’s concerns about the instability in the country.

The Congolese opposition also demands an audit of the electoral register before the 2023 elections, in order to ensure the transparency and credibility of the electoral process. The CENI is under pressure to respond to this request and to carry out an international audit of the electoral register.

In a more positive context, a tripartite agreement between the DRC and Rwanda was signed for the voluntary repatriation of refugees. This step is a new era of reconciliation in relations between the two countries.

Finally, feminist activists from Kalehe made recommendations to the government after the natural disaster that caused the death of more than 438 people. These recommendations aim to better prepare and support women in the event of a natural disaster, thus enabling them to better protect their lives and those of others.

In summary, despite positive initiatives, the security situation in the DRC remains fragile and precarious. The attacks by ADF rebels in the Beni region are a constant reminder of the need to strengthen security in this region and in the whole country
