Humanitarian disaster in Kalehe: the DRC and MSF mobilized to respond to urgent needs

[News] The DRC responds to the humanitarian crisis in Kalehe

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been affected by a major humanitarian disaster: floods that have caused the death of nearly 450 people and considerable material damage in the Kalehe region, South Kivu province. The dignified and secure burial of the bodies, the care of the wounded, the protection against the risks of gender-based violence and the reconstitution of lost civil documents have been identified as urgent actions to be carried out.

Faced with this disastrous situation, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC and Coordinator of Humanitarian Action, Bruno Lemarquis, allocated 3 million US dollars from the humanitarian fund to strengthen access operations to the water, hygiene services, health, shelter as well as household items for food security and the protection of the children of the victims.

In partnership with the NGO Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which also deployed teams to Nyamukubi and Bushushu, relief operations evacuated 41 seriously injured people by boat to Bukavu to provide them with appropriate medical care.

This humanitarian aid is crucial for the inhabitants of Kalehe whose humanitarian, social and psychological situation remains very worrying. It is important to continue to support efforts to help those affected by this disaster in the DRC.
