The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing intense news on May 14, 2023. The Roads Office (OR) has just completed the construction of the Mulowe bridge, which connects the provinces of Maniema and Lomami. More than 20m long and built in reinforced concrete with a capacity of 45 tonnes, this bridge required a major investment from the central government, through the National Road Maintenance Fund (FONER), which financed its construction cost, estimated at FC 355,432,819.
This bridge, which spans the Mulowe River, aims to solve the various problems of road infrastructure in these neighboring provinces, and to ensure a better connection between Maniema and the surrounding provinces. Will this achievement boost the economic development of these regions? The future will tell.
Apart from this good news, the situation in the DRC is also marked by other events. In the west of the country, a deadly attack by militiamen has led to new community tensions and political tension is also palpable, as the police ban a meeting of the presidential party. In addition, the humanitarian crisis in which the country is plunged calls for urgent mobilization.
Despite everything, some good news should be reported, such as the awareness campaign on sexual and reproductive health among displaced women in Bulengo, which was a great success, or the inspiration of the Congolese president who wishes to draw inspiration from the model development plan to improve the diamond industry and strengthen the country’s internal security.
The news from the DRC is dense and contrasting in this month of May 2023, showing once again the many challenges to be met for the country.
