“Suspension of activities at the Provincial Assembly of Tanganyika following the dismissal of the governor: The Deputy Prime Minister takes a radical decision to preserve social peace”

In a circular note dated May 12, 2023, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Security, Peter Kazadi, announced the suspension of plenary-related activities at the Tanganyika Provincial Assembly, until further notice. This decision is taken to prevent possible slippages, disturbances to public order and threats to social peace.

The Minister also summoned the Bureau of the Assembly for a meeting in Kinshasa. This decision comes shortly after the dismissal of Governor Julie Ngungwa by provincial deputies. Out of 25 elected officials, 14 voted for his forfeiture during a plenary session held in Kalemie.

This suspension is certainly a necessary measure to avoid violence and demonstrations that could disrupt social peace and stability in the province. We hope that the parties will manage to resolve the conflict quickly so that the Provincial Assembly of Tanganyika can resume its normal activities and continue to serve the local population.
