The city of Beni, located in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has experienced a new wave of insecurity in recent times. In an attempt to put an end to this situation, the police arrested twenty-two people, including three women, suspected of being the perpetrators of the burglaries and armed robberies which are increasing in the city.
The suspects were presented to the press by local police, like a first wave of twelve people who had been arrested the previous week. Among the latest people arrested were some who were caught red-handed and found in possession of stolen items such as television screens, plastic chairs and furniture.
This police operation thus contributes to sensitizing the population of Beni on the harmful consequences of crime and seems to be bearing fruit. It is part of a broader movement to fight against insecurity in this city affected for many years by the violence of armed groups.
Beyond this situation, other news deserve attention. The African Union (AU) has thus dispatched a regional force to the DRC in order to restore peace and security in the east of the country. Similarly, the province of South Kivu is hit by floods and health risks, and UNICEF is responding urgently to deal with this humanitarian situation.
Finally, political tensions are felt in the DRC, with the dismissal of agents of the Presidency’s Communication Department, deemed suspicious.
It is essential to remain vigilant in the face of all these subjects and especially in the face of false information that is sometimes relayed on social networks. Incorrect information can indeed aggravate the situation and lead to harmful misunderstandings.
