“Two years after the state of siege in Ituri: violence under control but the DRC still faces many challenges”

In Ituri, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the state of siege has been in force for two years. This decision was taken to track down the local and foreign armed groups responsible for many massacres in the region. Since then, the defense and security forces have carried out more than 700 mixed patrols in the town of Bunia and its surroundings, helping to avert all the threats hanging over the town. The army notes that more than 500 armed bandits have been arrested, more than 100 weapons recovered, and many property of the population have been returned to their owners.

According to Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, spokesperson for the army in Ituri, thanks to these efforts, the city of Bunia and the province of Ituri have regained their former dignity. The city and its surroundings today exude an air of peace and tranquility everywhere and under all circumstances.

In two years, the army has brought the violence under control on the main arteries and the large agglomerations of the territories of Irumu, Djugu and Mambasa using two approaches, namely the military and the non-military. This allowed the province of Ituri to move towards a stabilization that contrasts with the previous twenty years.

Beyond this newfound stability, the Democratic Republic of Congo must face other challenges. In particular that of the natural disasters which affect the country, such as the epidemics of cholera and measles in North Kivu. The country must therefore invest in prevention and the resilience of populations.

In addition, the Democratic Republic of Congo is in the process of regaining economic stability with a budget surplus of 1,828 million dollars announced for 2023. The country is also signing interesting economic partnerships, such as the one with Botswana during the Gaberone forum.

However, the country has to face heated debates, such as that of the revision of the family code which raises questions on the dowry and polygamy or that of the audit of the CENI electoral register which risks leading to a crisis of confidence.

In short, the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing many challenges and it is important that the authorities continue to work to guarantee the stability and well-being of the population.
