The humanitarian crisis in the province of North Kivu and Ituri continues to weigh on the population. As the situation is increasingly difficult, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC and Coordinator of Humanitarian Action, Bruno Lemarquis, recently launched a call for mobilization in favor of the populations of North Kivu. and Ituri.
During a two-day mission to Goma with ambassadors from several countries and heads of agencies of humanitarian organizations, Bruno Lemarquis requested the help of diplomats to mobilize funds for the humanitarian response and find a lasting solution to the crisis. which is shaking the east of the country. Lemarquis stressed the need for a coordinated, effective and more robust humanitarian response given the explosion of needs since the resurgence of M23 and the exponential increase in the number of displaced people.
The mobilization of resources remains more than ever essential, as well as the pressure exerted on donors. Indeed, the humanitarian response in the DRC is funded at only 50%, while the last 12 months have seen an increase in humanitarian needs in several provinces, notably North Kivu and Ituri.
It is necessary to continue to put the DRC under the radar so that it receives the same attention. And as Bruno Lemarquis pointed out, “a person in need, wherever they are, is a person in need”.
In this context, it is imperative that the international community strengthen its support for the DRC to come to the aid of the most vulnerable populations.
