“Septic tanks in Kinshasa: the laxity of the authorities leads to a disastrous situation”

In Kinshasa, the inhabitants are confronted with a distressing spectacle in front of the NS SMART supermarket. The overflowing septic tanks of the latter, located at the entrance to Kalembelembe Avenue, discharge their contents into the middle of the street. Passers-by must hold their noses so as not to be bothered by the foul odors.

This type of situation is frequently repeated in different parts of the city. The inhabitants deplore the laxity of the authorities at the origin of this situation. In some cases, some take advantage of the rain to empty septic tanks in the streets.

Many families cannot afford the emptying services offered by private companies and the septic tanks are overflowing. The population is worried about their health, especially for the food vendors located a few meters from this place.

The government should take measures to combat this urban pollution by emptying septic tanks regularly and repairing the pipes. The inhabitants of the city must be made aware of the impact of these dangerous behaviors on their health
