The populations of the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to suffer the consequences of natural disasters. After the torrential rain which caused more than 400 deaths and thousands of missing people in Kalehe, the landslide in the site of Bisunzu and that of Katholo, territory of Lubero, caused the death of seven people engulfed under the rubble. According to local civil society, this tragedy took place during a heavy rain which surprised all the villagers. The pastor of the CBCA Katholo parish, very saddened by this news, testifies to the loss of members of his Christian community.
These tragic events highlight the vulnerability of Congolese populations to climate change and the vagaries of nature. The Congolese authorities must take these tragedies into consideration and think about better structuring their emergency plan to better support and protect the populations.
These natural disasters continue to plague the eastern provinces of the DRC. The government must develop a climate change adaptation strategy to better protect the population and avoid loss of life. It is also essential to put in place a policy for the prevention and management of natural risks, taking into account the particularities of each region.
Global warming is a crucial subject that must be taken into account when making government decisions. It is time to step up efforts to curb the harmful effects of this phenomenon and protect the future of the Congolese people.
