The inhabitants of Kalehe, in the province of South Kivu, have been hit by a natural disaster after torrential rains. According to the minutes of the 98th meeting of the Council of Ministers, this situation is now considered a disaster area, and the government will mobilize resources to support the affected populations.
In addition to addressing the short-term consequences, Prime Minister Sama Lukonde asked the Ministers of Environment and Sustainable Development, Land Use Planning and Mines to propose long-term solutions to prevent natural disasters in the region. He advocated a reflection on the preservation of the forest, the development of living spaces, and the implementation of alternative strategies for artisanal mining.
Due to the considerable material and human damage, this government decision is a relief for the local populations. The Kalehe disaster area is now at the center of the State’s concerns to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected inhabitants.
The images of the flood in Kalehe published on social networks testify to the gravity of the situation. The torrential rains caused numerous victims and injuries as well as considerable material damage in the villages of Bushushu and Minova.
