International Nurses Day in the DRC: advocacy for the promotion of an essential profession

International Nurses Day was celebrated last Friday in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The opportunity for the president of the National Order of Nurses of Congo (ONIC), Mr. Komba Djeko, to send a strong message for the promotion of the nursing profession. According to him, this profession should be further promoted, because it should not be accessible to just anyone.

The president of ONIC also noted that the working conditions of nurses are not always there. Indeed, the insufficient construction of hospitals by the Congolese State and the lack of the most basic equipment in existing ones are obstacles to the exercise of this profession. “The environment par excellence of the nurse’s work is the place of care, that is to say, the hospital and the health center. If this place does not meet the standards, does not meet the in terms of staffing, in terms of security, well, that’s the first difficulty we have”, noted Mr. Komba Djeko.
