The humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to attract the attention of the international community. At the end of a two-day mission to Goma, several ambassadors and heads of humanitarian agencies called for mobilization in favor of the populations of North Kivu and Ituri.
Bruno Lemarquis, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC and Coordinator of Humanitarian Action, insisted on the need for a more robust, more coordinated, more effective humanitarian response to the explosion of needs in course of the last few months. With more than a million people displaced over the course of a year, Lemarquis stressed the need to mobilize resources and lobby donors internationally.
The humanitarian response in the DRC is currently 50% funded, while humanitarian needs have increased significantly in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri over the past 12 months. It is therefore imperative to continue to put the DRC under the radar of the international community so that it benefits from the same attention.
The mobilization of funds for the humanitarian response, but also for a lasting resolution of the crisis that is shaking the east of the country is therefore more necessary than ever. The humanitarian situation in the DRC is a major issue and it is important to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by the populations in these regions of the country.
