The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, visited the Jwaneng mine in Botswana. The purpose of this visit was to discover the Botswana model of diamond production and marketing, given that Botswana is the world’s largest producer of diamonds in value and volume ahead of Russia. During this visit, President Tshisekedi expressed his wish to duplicate this model in the Democratic Republic of Congo to reorganize the country’s diamond industry.
Prior to this visit, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi had spent a day at the headquarters of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Gaborone, in his capacity as current President of this institution. He also participated in an Extraordinary Summit of the Troika of SADC Heads of State and Government to discuss security issues, particularly in the eastern part of the DRC and more particularly in North Kivu.
The DRC thus has the opportunity to draw inspiration from Botswana’s best practices in diamond production and marketing to improve its own diamond industry. This visit by President Tshisekedi could therefore mark the beginning of a new era for the country’s diamond industry and help strengthen the DRC’s economy.
