“Dismissed governor and political tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo: towards a crisis to be avoided?”

The dismissal of Julie Ngungwa Mwayuma, governor of the province of Tanganyika, continues to provoke reactions throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. Following this eviction, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior and Security, Peter Kazadi, summoned the office of the Provincial Assembly in Kinshasa.

In a circular note dated May 12, 2023, VPM Kazadi Kankonde said that this summons was intended to avoid any slippage and disturbances to public order, or threat to social peace in a situation which “may cause” tensions. . The office of the Provincial Assembly must, moreover, suspend its plenaries until further notice.

Julie Ngungwa Mwayuma’s dismissal decree was signed last Monday by only 14 deputies out of the 25 in the Tanganyika Provincial Assembly. The charges against the governor include financial embezzlement, opaque management of the province, private procurement, lack of leadership, and lack of development vision.

At the same time, the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to mobilize the authorities. The populations affected are in fact ever more numerous, and the aid provided by humanitarian organizations remains insufficient. In addition, the security situation has also deteriorated recently, particularly in North Kivu, where attacks by the Democratic and Allied Forces (ADF) are increasing.

Despite this, President Felix Tshisekedi remains optimistic about the country’s future. During his official visit to Botswana, he sought to boost trade relations between the two countries, to encourage beneficial exchanges and promote regional economic cooperation.

In conclusion, the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains turbulent, between humanitarian crises, security issues and political tensions. It is important to follow closely the development of these events, as well as the measures taken by the authorities to deal with them.
