“Kamituga: Road embankment works financed by the town hall and carried out by the Chinese company ORC, but challenges remain for the DRC”

Kamituga, 10 May 2023 – The town of Kamituga, located 175 km west of Bukavu in the province of South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is benefiting from backfilling works on the road section Camp 6 roundabout Butwa, financed by the town hall of Kamituga and carried out by the Chinese company ORC active in the exploitation of minerals in the territory of Mwenga.

The work, which lasted three days, was praised by the mayor of Kamituga, Alexandre Bundya M’pila, for the active participation of the population and the contribution of the Chinese company ORC.

In another vein, the NGO Médecins Sans Frontières warns of the alarming situation of sexual violence in eastern DRC. Cases of rape have been reported, many involving children. This situation requires urgent action to protect the population and guarantee the safety of children.

In addition, the European Union provided humanitarian aid following the deadly floods in South Kivu, which claimed the lives of more than 400 people and left hundreds missing. The exams were disrupted there, forcing students to flee their homes to take their baccalaureate.

Despite these challenges, progress has been made in preparing for the elections in the DRC, with the establishment of an EU election observation mission. This mission is responsible for ensuring the holding of free, transparent and credible elections in the DRC.

In short, the political, social and economic situation in the DRC is characterized by challenges and progress. There is an urgent need to act in the face of sexual violence and deadly floods to protect the population and guarantee the stability of the country
