South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been hit hard by the deadly floods which have already caused the death of more than 400 people and the disappearance of more than 200 others. Faced with this natural disaster, the European Union has decided to support the Congolese authorities.
Indeed, Jean-Marc Châtaigner, head of the European Union (EU) delegation in the DRC, announced that the EU was already putting resources in place to provide humanitarian aid to the affected populations. For him, it’s time for solidarity, he will do everything possible to support the steps taken by the Congolese authorities to save lives.
Among the resources made available to the victims, the EU will highlight medicines, tents for shelter, etc. It will also work with civil society actors, in particular the Congolese Red Cross, to ensure that humanitarian aid is distributed under the best conditions.
This humanitarian aid is in addition to that already provided by the EU in the city of Goma a few weeks ago.
At the same time, in celebration of Europe Day in the DRC, a cultural evening was organized on the occasion to allow the Congolese to exchange around the plastic arts, music, oratorical arts and theater. The opportunity for the European Union to also promote the culture of the country and the immense artistic wealth it conceals.
These deadly floods remind us of how the DRC can be subject to many challenges and tragedies. The efforts of the international community and the Congolese authorities should continue to be strengthened to prevent or respond to emergencies in the country.
