United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres takes part in the Addis Ababa Framework Agreement summit on peace, security and cooperation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes region . During this event, Mr. Guterres called for strengthening inter-African cooperation mechanisms to revitalize this regional mechanism aimed at establishing peace, security and cooperation in the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as in the entire Great Lakes region.
While acknowledging that there has been progress made over the past ten years, Mr. Guterres is aware that much remains to be done to resolve the difficulties faced by Congolese in the east of the country. Indeed, the various armed groups, the terrorists of the ADF and now those of M23, as well as the abuses committed by the latter have caused enormous suffering to the Congolese population.
According to Mr. Guterres, the mobilization of the entire international community is therefore required, with an essential role for the group of countries of the Great Lakes, the East African Community and Angola. He also believes that the United Nations must fully support African initiatives to help resolve the problems that continue to threaten the DRC and the Great Lakes region.
To achieve this, the Secretary General of the United Nations encourages the withdrawal of the M23, as well as a cantonment of the armed groups to definitively solve the security problem. He also commends the efforts made by Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye and his government to find a solution to the situation in the DRC.
In conclusion, the meeting in which the Secretary-General of the United Nations participated highlighted once again the need to strengthen inter-African cooperation in order to achieve the establishment of lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in the region. of the Great Lakes
