Gold trafficking is a real scourge in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This is why President Tshisekedi welcomed the dismantling of a network of gold traffickers in the province of South Kivu. Indeed, senior State officials assigned to various services operating at the borders and foreign economic operators with the complicity of border countries, mainly in Rwanda, were arrested. This operation made it possible to seize large quantities of gold, as well as large sums of money in different foreign currencies.
This fight against gold trafficking is a priority for Felix Tshisekedi. He urged the population to collective vigilance to fight against this scourge. To carry out this fight effectively, the President also asked the Ministers of Justice and that of Finance to surround themselves with the skills of the National Financial Intelligence Unit (CENAREF), the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) and the National Commission for the Fight Against Mining Fraud to join their proven expertise in this fight.
Still in this same approach, the Congolese Head of State invited the Minister of Mines to actively lead a communication campaign on the government’s determination in the fight against gold trafficking and the risks incurred by any individual, administrative service or institution that engages in this betrayal of the Nation.
It is essential to note that gold trafficking fuels armed groups and insecurity in the east, where populations are already tested by war and natural disasters, such as the floods that hit the region recently. Indeed, in this region, local authorities are working with the population to improve road accessibility and sustainable development in Bagira.
Faced with the urgency of the situation, public action for prevention and risk management is necessary. The Red Cross in the DRC works with local authorities to respond to humanitarian crises and improve the daily lives of local populations.
Finally, to fight against insecurity in the east of the country, SADC has sent forces to restore peace in the region. These are essential initiatives to address the unstable situation in the country
