Residents of Bekwarra area of Cross River State, Nigeria, can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, literally. After a long period of 15 years in darkness, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) has successfully restored power supply to the area. The news was greeted with enthusiasm by the locals, who expressed gratitude to the administration of Senator Bassey Otu for fulfilling its campaign promise to restore electricity to the area.
Innocent Inaku, the PHEDC Regional Manager for North and Central Cross River State, highlighted the crucial role played by Governor Otu in this achievement. He explained that Bekwarra had been plunged into darkness due to dilapidated electricity infrastructure and repeated acts of vandalism. However, with the determination of the governor, an action plan was put in place to reconnect and rehabilitate the electricity grid in a phased manner.
The first phase of the project was launched with the installation of six transformers in key locations in Bekwarra. To date, two of these transformers have been commissioned, providing electricity to part of the community. Despite challenges such as grid issues caused by the long power outage and the lack of a local transmission station, the project is moving forward with determination.
Signor Omang, the traditional leader of Ada Bekwarra, described the governor as a “God-sent leader” for keeping his promise to bring light back to the area. He highlighted the positive impact that restoring power would have on the local economy and the quality of life of the residents.
